Administration of Medicine in School
In line with Care Inspectorate’s ‘Management of Medication in Day-Care of Children and Childminding Services’ guidelines and Aberdeenshire Council’s ‘Supporting Children and Young People with Health Care Needs and Managing Medicines in Educational Establishments’ policy we will ensure that that any/all medication administered to children in our care, has been authorised by the child’s parent / carer, administered by a qualified member of staff and that accurate records of any medication stored and administered are kept.
Where possible, parents / carers should try to administer medication at home. Should you wish the school to administer medication for your child, you should complete Aberdeeenshire Council Medical Form 1 (Request for School to Administer Medication) which will then be signed and dated by the Head Teacher prior to any medication being administered.
Please note that any medicines being handed into the school should be have a current prescription for your child.
The School will ensure that medication is stored safely out of reach of children and is available to any adult who needs to access the medication. Any epipens and asthma inhalers will be kept in pouches clearly marked with the child’s photograph and should remain in close proximity to the child at all times.
Should any medication such as antibiotics be required to go home at the end of a day for use at home, please note that parents / carers will be responsible to collecting this at pick up time. We cannot give medicines to children to take home themselves.
Refusal to Take Medicine
Where a child refuses to take medication, staff will not put pressure on the child to do so. If a child spits out administered medication, staff will not administer any further dose. The child’s parent / carer would be contacted to notify them in these instances. In the event of an urgent situation the emergency services will be contacted following the outlined protocol on Medical Form 6 (Emergency Planning).
